Communities of the Jiguamiando and the Curbarado v. Columbia, IACtHR (2003)

The Inter-American Court ordered provisional measures to ensure the protection of the indigenous community on their rightful lands in Colombia.  The Court cited ongoing violence, kidnapping, forced disappearance, executions, destruction of property and displacement of the community by paramilitary groups in the area.  Repeated attempts by these groups to force the community to cultivate palm oil or coca plants were also cited.  The Court also held that given the identifiable group and geographic location of the victims under threat, a provisional measure could be issued to a group instead of specific, identified individuals.
