This article is an excerpt from 2003 INCB Annual Report. In this article authors address the impact that the global illicit drug market has on the overall economic development. The first and second parts discuss short-term gains that illicit drug production and trafficking bring, and estimate the scope of income generated through such activities. The next three parts focus on why illicit drug production prevents long-term economic growth, and can potentially lead to destabilisation of the public order, economy and civil society. The article concludes with recommendations to the relevant stakeholders.
