The Rehab Archipelago: Forced Labor and Other Abuses in Drug Detention Centers in Southern Vietnam (2011)

The Report of the Human Rights Watch, "The Rehab Archipelago: Forced Labor and Other Abuses in Drug Detention Centers in Southern Vietnam", revealed human rights abuses of people confined in 14 detention centers in the Southern part of Vietnam. While the centers are mandated to treat and rehabilitate drug users, in reality thousands of men and women are being held against their will in these Government-run centers without due process, where they are subjected to unpaid forced labor six day a week, suffer from torture and physical violence. Detainees are forced to work in agricultural production, garment manufacturing, other forms of manufacturing, such as making bamboo and rattan products, and construction work. Moreover, in addition to adults, children who use drugs are also held in drug detention centers being forced to work, beaten and abused.
