Closing the Gap: National Indigenous Health Equality Targets, Outcomes from the National Indigenous Health Equality Summit (2008)

Date: 28 July 2008

The report addresses the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) efforts of closing the gap between Indigenous Australians and non-indigenous Australians on health and life expectancy, educational achievement and employment opportunities.

One of the COAG targets is to tackle the negative effect of substance use amongst indigenous people, by ensuring early intervention, implementing harm reduction programmes, providing rehabilitation and accessible treatment services (including in the remote areas) and developing a skilled drug workforce.

It is also mentioned that the HIV/Hepatitis C rates needs to be reduced.
