Report of the Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment: Mission to Indonesia, Manfred Nowak (2008)

Date: 10 March 2008

This report presents the findings and recommendations of the Special Rapporteur on his mission to Indonesia. He mentions that abuses by the police which amount to torture and ill-treatment are more common in the populated cities, which are faced with higher urban crime and drug-related offences. Also, ill-treatment is used primarily in the cases of drug-related crimes in order to extract confessions or to receive information on drug suppliers.

The report also presents individual cases (some of which related to drug issues) where allegations of ill–treatment were made by detainees from different detention centers.
