Report of the Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment: Mission to Jordan, Manfred Nowak (2007)

Date: 05 January 2007

This report presents the findings and recommendations of the Special Rapporteur on his mission to Jordan. He acknowledges that torture and ill-treatment are persistent in this country because of a lack of awareness of the problem and of institutionalized impunity.

He mentions that one form of ill-treatment represent the beatings carried out by the police personnel in sleeping quarters with the pretext of looking for drugs or illegal weapons.

The report also presents individual cases (some of which related to drug issues) where allegations of ill–treatment were made by detainees from different detention centers.
