Report of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention: Mission to Argentina (2003)

Date: 23 December 2003

This report presents the findings and recommendations of the Working Group on its mission to Argentina. It raises concerns regarding the poor conditions of detention and the overcrowding in prisons, as well as the police discretion in detaining individuals.

It further highlights the high rate of arrests of children, many of them being detained for small-scale drug trafficking offences. It also condemns the conditions of detention in youth custody centres where innocent children are also detained for their own protection, together with children at risk and child beggars.
