Report of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention: Mission to Canada (2005)

Date: 05 December 2005

This report presents the findings and recommendations of the Working Group on its mission to Canada. It highlights that the increased rate of pretrial detention affects vulnerable groups (including drug users). They are also more likely to be denied bail and have difficulties accessing legal representation.

It also notes that drug treatment courts have been established for drug-using defendants, giving them the opportunity to have the charges withdrawn if they successfully complete a rehabilitation programme.
