HIV and Related Infections in Prisoners 4: HIV, Prisoners and Human Rights (July 2016)

This review was published by the Lancet in July 2016. The review looks at the disproportionate amount of persons infected with HIV and other infectious diseases present amongst prisoners, as well as other human rights abuses.

Topics covered in the review range from punitive laws, discriminatory policing and failed justice systems. It also addresses the issue of human rights and HIV within prisons, with reference to topics such as overcrowding, unhealthy conditions, violence and discrimination. Conclusively the review offers a 'way forward', which includes a reform of criminal laws, reforms of law enforcement and the justice system, addressing violence and rights violations in prisons and upon release, and ensuring fulfilment of the right to health in prisons.
