The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol was adopted on 13 December 2006 in New York. The first comprehensive human rights treaty of the 21st century aims to transform the concept of disability itself. By focusing on the social model of disability rather the traditional medical model, the Convention creates novel interpretations in human rights law, particularly regarding legal capacity.
