Jiguamiando Basin Community Council v. Columbia, IACHR (2002)

Date: 07 November 2002

The Inter-American Commission ordered precautionary measures to ensure the protection of the indigenous community on their rightful lands in Colombia.  The Court cited ongoing violence, kidnapping, forced disappearance, executions, destruction of property and displacement of the community by paramilitary groups in the area.  Repeated attempts by these groups to force the community to cultivate palm oil or coca plants were also cited.  The Commission held that despite communications with the government, armed incursions continue.
