Angel Reiniero Vega Jimenez v. Ecuador, IACHR (2001)

Angel Reiniero Vega, an Ecuadorian national, died from injuries he sustained following an attack by INTERPOL agents at his home who suspected him of drug trafficking.  The family of the victim and the government of Ecuador reached a friendly settlement in which the government accepted its international responsibility for violating Mr. Vega Jimenez’s right to life, liberty and humane treatment.  They further accepted responsibility for failing to effectively compensate the family and investigate and punish those responsible.  The Commission approved of the settlement and acknowledged the government’s payment of damages to the family.
