Report of the International Narcotics Control Board for 2003: Drugs, Crime and Violence- the Microlevel Impact (2004)

This article is an excerpt from 2003 INCB Annual Report. In this article authors discuss the relationship between drug abuse and other criminal offences, including violent crimes, and approach them using microlevel indicators. The first part focuses on the characteristics and possible explanations for the relationship between drug abuse and crime levels. The second part provides in-depth analysis of relationship between drug abuse and crime levels, including based on an individual prospective, on social and cultural factors, and others. The third part addressees the effect that drug abuse makes on youth, and how it potentially can result in crimes and violence. The fourth part analyses potential consequences of drug abuses and considers the potential ways forward. The fifth part addressees policy implications related to state response to drugs, crime and violence. The article concludes with considerations for intervention.
