On January 24, 2012, the Sentencing Council released the new Definitive Guidelines for Drug Offences "to ensure consistent and proportionate sentencing for all drug offences that come before courts in England and Wales."
The guidelines followed a period of consultation with about 700 people in the criminal justice system and the public. It incorporates new aggravating and mitigating factors.
