UN Human Rights Committee: Concluding Observations on Mauritius (2005)

Date: 27 April 2005

In the concluding observations on the fourth periodic report of Mauritius, the Committee raised concern regarding the non-compliance of the national law of Mauritius with the Covenant, namely the Dangerous Drugs Act of 2000 under which bail is not allowed for persons arrested or held in custody for drug trafficking, especially those previously convicted of any drug offence. Additional concern was raised that the Act allowed detention of suspects for 36 hours without access to counsel.
